Game 2 comments

It's always difficult to play in a game where the two teams are completely mismatched. We have certainly been on the wrong side of those games before, and it is no fun for either team.

Still, these games can be very useful, and Coach Andy and I tried hard to make the most of it without running up the score. As soon as we realized what was happening, we started requiring our boys to pass the ball a lot (after 2 touches), and control the flow of play (at least 4 passes before shooting). We asked our defenders to stay back, and we worked hard on keeping our players spread across the field. Finally, we reversed roles and had our defenders play forward, with our midfielders playing defense.

We also had a great opportunity to teach about fair play, sportsmanship and the beautiful game. It took a while, but I think the boys really did well to play with grace and respect. Moreover, the referee appreciated our effort and worked with us to make sure the other team remained engaged in the game.

Overall, I was pleased with the way we played. We did have some issues that we'll work on in practice. But I'm glad everyone had a chance to get out front.

Congrats to Rafael who showed remarkable sportsmanship, and will be our team captain next week. REMINDER: We have both a Saturday and Sunday game next weekend. See you then.

Hi all,

I was pleasantly surprised to see our kids not celebrating much after they scored goals. Did Steve or Andy asked them that or they just did it on their own?

Two suggestions:

1. When Khoi made 2 corner kicks placing the ball perfectly in front of the goalie, there was nobody there. Steve, you might want to try this corner kick drill this week. Ask 4 players to stand in front of the goal (right outside the box): one on the left goal post, one on the right, and two directly in front (one stands a few feet behind the other). First, you can stand half way between the goal and the corner to throw the ball in (so that the ball would be in front of the goal). After they get the idea, you might let Khoi or Rafael to do a corner kicks.

2. Another good drill to help improving their passing, running to support each other & not crowding out the ball, and aggressive defense is monkeys in the middle (4 versus 2).

If you need help doing these, just let me know.

Nhan,

The kids stopped celebrating on their own. We talked a lot of about respecting the other team, and respecting the game. I think that may have helped.

The corner kick drill is a good one. We haven't had a consistent player to take the corners until this year, so its probably time to start working on it.

We're already doing monkey(s) in the middle. Thanks for the advice.
